Djerbahood, tu connais? L’idée était de ranimer une localité au sud-est de la Tunisie par le passage de 150 artistes. Chacun a laissé sa trace à Erriadh, petit village typique sur la route de Ghriba, pour créer des murales tout en l’adaptant à l’environnement. Le jeune artiste Inkman expose ses créations qui s’empreignent telles des arabesques. Ses œuvres témoignent de son art pour la calligraphie et elles révèlent bien plus que de gracieuses lettres entrecroisées.
Quelle est la raison d’être de Djerbahood?
Djerbahood est l’un des plus beaux projets que j’ai assisté! Un projet crée par Mehdi Ben Cheikh, le fondateur de la Galerie Itinerrance à Paris. Pour la première fois, la Tunisie et spécialement Erriadh-Djerba sont à l’honneur et ont permis d’offrir le premier musée à ciel ouvert pour les amoureux du street art avec la participation des street artistes les plus connus dans le monde. J’ai été invité par l’initiateur du projet pour partager ma calligraffiti avec d’autres artistes et principalement avec les habitants de ce petit village.
Qu’est-ce que cela signifiait pour vous de participer à ce collectif artistique?
Le but de cette participation à ce collectif artistique s’établit surtout sur l’échange et le partage avec des icônes du mouvement street art. C’est une expérience qui m’a offert plusieurs contacts, beaucoup de partage sur le plan social avec les artistes par leurs histoires, leurs expériences, leurs techniques, etc.
D’où vous est venue l’idée de vous nommer Inkman?
L’idée de se nommer Inkman est un peu bizarre pour quelques-uns, mais la vérité est qu’on m’appelle comme cela sur la planète « Inkuna », une planète inconnue pour les habitants de la terre. Et moi, je suis en mission ici, sur votre planète, pour sauver les murs oubliés et changer un peu la vision des amoureux de l’art, à travers ma calligraffiti!
Inkman s’est inspiré du premier outil qu’il a utilisé pour la création de cette typographie contemporaine qui est tout simplement l’encre, une matière utilisée depuis des siècles par les calligraphes. Pour certains, Inkman est un nouveau super héros comme Superman, Batman.
Que révèlent vos écritures sur les murs à Djerbahood et dans vos autres projets?
Mes écritures parlent des souvenirs que j’ai vécu à Djerba, des pensées, des poèmes… Mais généralement des pensées qui me viennent à l’esprit en m’inspirant de mon entourage ou parfois des dialogues entre moi et d’autres personnages imaginaires.
Comment se déroule votre démarche artistique?
Au début, je travaillais comme designer graphique autodidacte comme freelance jusqu’en 2008. Après, j’ai commencé à pratiquer le graffiti qui a été l’une de mes influences dès l’enfance par le mouvement hip-hop, le break dance, etc. Beaucoup d’artistes que j’ai connus m’ont encouragé dès le début comme eL Seed, par exemple.
Jour après jour, je découvre de nouvelles techniques en design graphique et là je suis tombé amoureux avec le monde de la typographie; j’ai donc commencé à pratiquer la calligraphie arabe et latine. Après des mois de pratique, j’ai voulu créer une écriture personnelle qui fait l’alliance entre ma culture et mes racines avec la lettre latine, et là la magie a commencé.
J’écris mes propres textes en anglais avec un style typographique qui transforme la beauté et l’harmonie des lettres arabes vers des lettres latines. L’idée c’est que les gens découvrent ce qu’est non pas uniquement la calligraphie arabe, mais bien les lettres latines sous forme de lettres arabes.

Djerbahood, you heard? The idea of this creative project was to revive a southeast town in Tunisia with the help of 150 artists. Each of them has left their mark in Erriadh, a small village on the road to Ghriba, to create murals while adapting to their environment. The young artist Inkman exhibited his work which blends perfectly into the city. His creations reflect his calligraphy art and indicate more than graceful intertwined letters.
What is the raison d’etre of Djerbahood?
Djerbahood is one of the coolest projects that I have took part! A project created by Mehdi Ben Cheikh, founder of the Galerie Itinerrance in Paris. For the first time, Tunisia and especially Erriadh-Djerba are honored and enable to offer the first open-air museum for lovers of street art with the participation of the most famous artists in the world. I was invited by the creator of this project in order to share my calligraffiti with other artists, mainly with the inhabitants of this small village.
What does it mean for you to participate in this collective art?
The purpose of the involvement into this collective art was generally based on the exchange and on sharing with icons of the street art movement. It was an experience that has been offered to me to be able to make several contacts and also to share stories, experiences, techniques, etc.
How did you get the idea of the name Inkman?
The idea of Inkman is a little strange to some people, but the truth is that I have been called like this on the planet « Inkuna » an unknown planet for the inhabitants of the earth. I’m on a mission here, on your planet, to save the forgotten walls and to change the vision of art lovers through my calligraffiti!
Inkman was inspired by the first tool that he used to create this contemporary typography which is simply ink, a material used for centuries by calligraphers. For some, Inkman is a new super hero like Superman, Batman.
What does your lettering reveal on the walls in Djerbahood and in your other projects?
It reveals the memories I have lived in Djerba, thoughts, poems … But usually they are thoughts that come to my mind, sometimes inspired by people around me, sometimes from dialogues between me and some imaginary characters.
How does your artistic approach initiate?
Before, I worked as a freelance self-taught graphic designer until 2008. After, I started practicing graffiti which was one of my influences from childhood through hip-hop, break dance, etc. Many artists I knew encouraged me from the beginning like eL Seed, for example.
Day after day I discovered new graphic design technics and then I fell in love with the world of typography, so I started practicing Arabic and Latin calligraphy. After months of practice, I wanted to create a personal style that represent the link between my culture and my roots with Latin letter; the magic began.
I write my own lyrics in English with a typographic style that transforms the beauty and the harmony of the Arabic letters to the Latin letters. The idea is that people discover not only Arabic calligraphy, but mainly the Latin letters in the form of Arabic letters.
